Kratom, Krathom, Ithang, Kakuam or Thom. Kratom refers to the plant Mitragyna speciosa Korth. An extremely rare tree from Thailand and Malaysia. The Mitragyna tree is in the same family as the coffee tree (Rubiaceae). Over 25 alkaloids have been isolated from Kratom; the most important being mitragynine, an indole alkaloid. Kratom is widely known throughout Southeast Asia as a mild intoxicant (in the same general category as nicotine, caffeine, betel nut, etc.)
